Ancestral hall for the Khoo Klan

For holidays, weddings and birthdays, relatives gathered in the hall by the hundreds to celebrate together. And they burned incense in the hall's inner chambers, where tablets inscribed with the names of deceased male family members were proudly displayed, as a sign of respect to their ancestors. (all of the gold things you are seeing in the photo are the tablets)

Halls also became corporations of sorts, and family members, traditionally only the males, its shareholders. Because the property was registered under the family name.
